It is difficult to quantify the benefits but at least 2 of the students involved with Sycamore were unlikely to successfully complete their secondary education and are now well into their year 10 and 11 and are planning a future which might even include further education Many schools have recognised the need to deal with children's personal crises at an early stage and see the benefits of this work in a decrease in truancy and disruption in the classroom. WHCM works in a number of schools in Essex and East London. Over the past two years we have significantly expanded our services providing one to one counselling in schools across mid Essex. We are now present in over 100 schools in Essex. In East London, with the support of the Big Lottery Fund we provide counselling to 9 schools. We work with many children who demonstrate emotional and behavioural difficulties that affect them to such a degree that it impacts on their capacity to learn. Many may have witnessed, or experienced, violence, addiction, abuse, neglect, bereavement or loss. By being given the opportunity to see these children on a one-to-one basis, in an environment that they recognise, we seek to restore these children's self-esteem, giving them confidence and making them aware of their individuality and potential.
