The young people’s service

Bridge provides 17 counselling sessions a week for Young People between 11 and 19. At Bridge we understand the financial pressures facing young people and teenagers, so with the support of the local PCT, any young person can access our service free of charge. Last year teenagers came to us for counselling for the following:

  • Having panic or anxiety attacks
  • Feeling depressed and down or like they were worthless and not as good as others
  • Having experienced the death of someone they were close to, either recently or in the past
  • Feeling angry and “out of control” with their anger
  • Dealing with the after effects of having their parents split up
  • Experiencing bullying
  • Recovering from abuse or other kinds of trauma

…and lots of other things as well. Sometimes people come with a specific problem, a desire to learn a little more about themselves, or simply for someone to talk to.

What you can expect from our service:
Counselling is an empowering process, in which a person is helped to take control of their life, fulfil their potential, and have an increased sense of well being. A counsellor is someone who is available to help you think things through and make sense of what is going on for you at the moment. You can always expect your counsellor to:

  • Respect your views
  • Not judge you
  • Value what you have to say

Counselling is confidential and all our counsellors are professionally trained and qualified.

Being able to go at my own pace was good. I liked having someone to talk to about everything and anything, A Bridge client 2008

Next steps to make any appointment

If you are a teenager who is thinking you may be interested in coming for counselling at Bridge: you can call or email the office to set up an “in-take appointment”. The in-take appointment is a one off meeting that gives you a chance to meet us and us a chance to meet you and for us all to decide together if counselling is right for you, now. This is an exploratory meeting and doesn’t commit you to anything on-going.

If you are a parent or carer wondering about the possibility of counselling for a Young Person: we ask that you call the office and talk with the Clinical Manager for Young People’s Services about what is going on for the Young Person in question so we can think together about the suitability of setting up an in-take appointment.

If you are a professional wanting to refer a Young Person for counselling: we ask that you contact the office to get a copy of our Referral Form and return this via email, fax or post.
